アメリカのテキサス州西部およびメキシコのコアウイラ州からオアハカ州に分布しています。木々に被われた渓谷や山地に生え、高さは９０〜１５０センチになります。茎はよく分枝します。葉は心形で光沢があり、芳香があります。６月から１１月ごろ、枝先に緩い総状花序をだし、鮮やかな赤色の花を咲かせます。花はハミングバードを惹きつけます。

シソ科アキギリ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Salvia regla。英名は Mountain sage、Red-sage salvia。

The Mountain sage (Salvia regla) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to western Texas in the United States and Mexico; from Coahuila to Oaxaca. This shrub grows in wooded canyons or mountains and can reach about 90-150 cm in height. The stem is much branched. The leaves are heart-shaped, glossy and aromatic. The loose racemes are borne on the terminal branches and bloom bright red flowers from June to November. They attract hummingbirds.
