ヨーロッパの南部が原産です。やや粗い短毛に被われ、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は長楕円形から長卵形で、葉の縁は全縁です。春から夏にかけて、茎頂に花序をだし、淡い紅紫色の花を咲かせます。花卉として栽培され、ピンク色や淡い紅色、白色などの花色があります。別名で「ふくろなでしこ（袋撫子）」とも呼ばれます。

The Nodding catchfly (Silene pendula) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is an annual herb that is native to southern Europe. This herb is covered with coarse short hairs and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are oblong to long-ovate and entire. The clusters are borne on the tem apices and bloom pale magenta flowers from spring to summer. This herb is cultivared as a garden flower and has various flower-colors; pink, pale rose-pink or white.
