ヨーロッパの中・南部および南西アジアが原産です。荒れ地や森、潅木の生垣などに生え、高さは1〜2メートルになります。地下に広がった根茎から茎を伸ばし、群落をつくります。葉は羽状複葉で、長さ15〜30センチ、対生します。小葉には悪臭があります。7月から8月ごろ、散房花序に白い花をいっぱい咲かせます。果実は小さく黒色の液果です。果実はオーストリアの人々に、気道や発熱の症状に効く民間薬として使われてきています。 
スイカズラ科ニワトコ属の多年草で、学名は Sambucus ebulus。英名は Dwarf elder、Danewort。 
The Dwarf elder (Sambucus ebulus) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a perennial herb that is native to southern and central Europe and southwest Asia. This herb grows in waste ground, woods or hedgerows and it can reach 1-2 m in height. The stems grows in large groups from an extensive perennial underground stem rhizome. The leaves are opposite, pinnate, 15-30 cm long, with 5-9 leaflets with a fetid smell. The numerous white flowers bloom in a corymb from July to August. The fruits are small glossy black berries. They have been used in the traditional Austrian medicine for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract and fever.
