The "Sankayou" (Diphylleia grayi) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Berberry family). It is a perennial herb that is distrubted northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, and as well as the Sakhlin. This herb grows in mountain to sub-alpine forests and can reach 50-60 cm in height. It sends out the large, deep notched, two leaves at the upper stem. The white, six-petaled flowers bloom at the tip of stem from May to July. The fruits ripen purple and are good to eat. The Japanese name is derived from "Hasu-no-ha" (lotus leaf) that grows in the mountains.
