中国の南部が原産です。わが国へは薬草として、江戸時代の初めに渡来しました。茎は直立して、高さは70〜120センチほどになります。葉は披針形または長卵形で、羽状に6〜8深裂します。不揃いな鋸歯があります。9月から10月ごろ、黄色い花を咲かせます。細い管状の舌状花が特徴です。葉は虫刺されや止血に、根は吐血や強壮薬として用いられました。 
キク科サンシチソウ属の多年草で、学名は Porophyllum japonicum。英名はありません。 
"Sanshichi-so" (Porophyllum japonicum) belongs to the Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native of the southern part of China. It was introduced into Japan as a herbal medicine at the beginning fo the Edo period (about 350 years ago). The stem stands upright and the plant grows up to 7-120 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate or long ovate and divided 6-8 deep pinnately. They have irregular serrated edges. The yellow flowers will bloom around Septemver to October. It is characterized by thin tubular ray florets. The leaves were used for insect bites and hemostasis, and the roots were used as hematemesis and tonic.
