"Sangoju-suzume-uri" (Melothria maderaspatana) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is distributed to the Okinawa Islands in Japan, as well as throughout the Old World Tropics including New Guinea and Australia. This herb grows in damp places in woodland, grassland and riverine margins. It is prostrate or climbing by tendrils. The leaves are variable, broadly ovate to triangular or palmately 3-5 lobed, with serrated margins. The flowers are small, yellow, and bloom in axillary clusters. The fruit is globose, 6-11 mm in diameter, smooth and hairless, green with paler stripes when young, bright red when ripe.
