インドの中・北部からヒマラヤ地方にかけて分布しています。雨季と乾季のはっきりした地域に生え、高さは３０〜３５メートルになります。３月から７月ごろ、下垂した円錐花序に淡黄白色の花を咲かせます。お釈迦様が涅槃に入ったとき、その四方にこの木が２本ずつ生えていたということから、別名で「さらそうじゅ（沙羅双樹）」とも呼ばれます。写真は、わが国ではじめて咲いた花。

フタバガキ科サラノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Shorea robusta。英名は Sal tree。

The Sal tree (Shorea robusta) belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae. It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from the central and northern parts of India to the Himalayas. This tree grows in areas with distinct rainy and dry seasons and can reach 30-35 m in height. The pale yellowish white flowers bloom on the drooping panicles from March to July. When Buddha entered Nirvana, two trees were growing on each side, so it is called "Sal tree". The photos are the first flower to bloom in Japan.
