ヒマラヤの東部からチベットの南西部に分布しています。高さは２メートルくらいになり、根元から吸枝（きゅうし）を伸ばして広がります。葉は披針形で光沢があり、先端が尖ります。早春、葉腋に小さな芳香のある白色の花を咲かせます。果実は球形の液果で黒紫色に熟します。種小名は１９世紀のイギリスの植物学者、ジョセフ・フッカー（Joseph D. Hooker）に因みます。

ツゲ科コッカノキ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Sarcococca hookeriana。英名は Christmas box、Sweet box。

The Christmas box (Sarcococca hookeriana) belongs to Buxaceae (the Box family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native from the eastern Himalaya to south-western Tibet. This shrub can reach about 2 m in height and spreads by suckers. The leaves are lanceolate and glossy with acute tips. The small fragrant white flowers appear on the axils in early spring. The fruits are round berries and ripen in blackish-purple. The specific epithet is named in honor of 19th century British botanist Joseph D. Hooker.
