アメリカの東南部、ジョージア州南部からフロリダ州北西部、それにミシシッピー州南部の海岸平野に分布しています。沼地や湿地に生え、高さは２５センチほどになります。捕虫葉は緑色の地に赤色の脈が入り、細長く伸びます。その頭部は大きく膨らんで小さな入り口があります。春から初秋まで、花茎を伸ばして濃紫色の花を咲かせます。花披には５個の花弁と５個の萼片があります。英名は、捕虫葉のかたちが「オウム」の頭に似ていることから。和名では「ひめへいしそう（姫瓶子草）」と呼ばれます。

The Parrot pitcher plant (Sarracenia psittacina) belongs to Sarraceniaceae (the Picher plant family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southeastern United States, from southern Georgia to northwestern Florida, and the coastal plains of southern Mississippi. This herb grows in swamps and bogs and is about 25 cm high. The bladders have red veins on the green ground and grow long and thin. Its head is large and has a small entrance. From spring to early fall, the flower stalks are stretched and dark purple flowers come in bloom. The corolla has 5 petals and 5 calyxes. The English name is because the shape of the bladder resembles the head of a "parrot". The Japanese name, it is called "Hime-heishi-so".
