アメリカの南東部、ノースカロライナ州からテキサス州東部の海岸沿いに分布しています。沼地や湿地に生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになり、ふつう５つの亜種に分類されます。捕虫葉は緑色で、赤色の脈が入ります。また先端は赤褐色の大理石模様になります。春から初夏のころ、花茎を伸ばして芳香のある赤色から暗赤色の花を咲かせます。和名では「あかばなへいしそう（赤花瓶子草）」と呼ばれます。

サラセニア科サラセニア属の多年草で、学名は Sarracenia rubra。英名は Miniature huntsman horn、Red pitcher plant。

The Miniature huntsman horn (Sarracenia rubra) belongs to Sarraceniaceae (the Picher plant family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed along the coast from North Carolina to eastern Texas in the southeastern United States. This herb grows in swamps and bogs, reaches 10 to 20 cm in height, and is usually classified into five subspecies. The bladders are green and have red veins. The tip of bladder has a reddish brown marbled mottles. From spring to early summer, the flower stalks are stretched to bloom fragrant red to dark red flowers. In Japanese name, it is called "Akabana-heishi-so".
