The "Sarumen-ebine" belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, and northern India. It grows in beech forests in mountainous areas and grows 30-50 cm tall. The pseudobulb is spherical, with several oblong leaves growing in bunches. Around April to May, the flower scapes grow and produce yellow-green flowers. The labellum is purplish-brown with fringed edges. The Japanese name is derived from the shape of the labellum, which resembles a monkey's face. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "綉邊根節蘭" and in Chinese, "三稜蝦背蘭" (san leng xia ji lan).
