アフリカのエチオピアが原産だといわれています。古くから各地に伝播し、わが国でも平安時代には栽培が始まっています。このササゲ属には１８０種ほどの品種がありますが、蔓性もしくは蔓なし矮性で、莢が長いのが共通した特徴です。栽培品種は、蔓性で莢が長く３０〜１００センチのグループ、蔓性もしくは蔓なし矮性で莢が１０〜３０センチのグループそれに蔓なし矮性で莢が１０センチほどのグループに大別されます。ふつうに「ささげ」といえば、莢が１０〜３０センチのグループを指します。和名の由来は、莢の先が上に反り返り、捧げもつ手の形に似ていることから。

The Cow pea (Vigna unguiculata) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual herb that is probably native to Ethiopia. It was introduced into various regions from long ago. It had been cultivated in Japan from Heian Period (about 1200 years ago). The Vigna genus consists about 180 species. They are vine or non-vine dwarf herbs and defined by having long pods. The cultivars are roughly divided into a group of vines with long pods of 30 to 100 cm, a group of vines or dwarfs without vines with pods of 10 to 30 cm, and a group with vines and dwarfs with pods of about 10 cm. Usually, "cow pea" refers to a group of 10 to 30 cm pods. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the tip of the pod bends upward and resembles the shape of a hand to hold something reverently with both hands.
