マレー半島が原産です。今では広く東南アジアで植栽されています。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは１２〜１７メートルほどになります。葉は大きな羽状複葉で四方に広がります。葉腋から円錐花序をだしますが、花の咲く前にこの先端を切断して樹液を集め、煮詰めて砂糖をつくるそうです。

ヤシ科クロツグ属の常緑高木で、学名は Arenga pinnata。英名は Sugar palm。

The Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Malay Peninsula. It is now widely planted in Southeast Asia. This tree grows in the rainforest and can reach 12 to 17 m in height. The leaves are large pinnate compound and spread in all directions. The panicles are borne on the axils, but before the flowers bloom, the tips are cut to collect the sap and boil down to make sugar.
