わが国の本州、神奈川県以西から近畿地方、それに九州に分布しています。渓谷の岸壁などに生え、高さは１０〜１００センチになります。春葉は披針形から広披針形、夏葉は倒披針形で、枝先に数個集まってつきます。「つつじ」より遅れて５月から７月ごろ、枝先に朱赤色の花を１〜２個咲かせます。花冠は漏斗形で５中裂し、雄しべは５個あります。園芸品種も多く作出され、ひとつの枝に異なった色の花が咲く、キメラ（咲き分け）といった品種もあります。 |

ツツジ科ツツジ属の半常緑低木で、学名は Rhododendron indicum。英名は Rhododendron。 |

The Rhododendron (Rhododendron indicum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small semi-deciduous tree that is distributed westward from Kanagawa prefecture to Kinki district of Hanshu and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in montane stream cliffs and can reach 10-100 cm in height. The spring foliages are lanceolate to broad lanceolate, and the summer foliages are oblanceolate and crowd at the end of twig. The 1-2 flowers come in the terminal branchlets from May to July. The corolla is funnel-shaped and quintuple-lobate with 5-stamens. Many cultivars have been breeded. |
