The "Sawa-gikyo" (Lobelia sessilifolia) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Japan, as well as the Korean Penibsula, China, eastern Siberia and the Kamchatska Peninsula. This herb grwos in montane marshes and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The stem is midair and erect. The leaves are lanceolate and alternate with fine toothed edges. The racemes are borne on the upper stems and bloom bright bluish-purple flowers from August to September. The corolla is labiate with bilobat upper lip and trilobate lower lip. The whole plant contains toxic alkaloid (Lobeline). It causes poisoning after accidental eating of the plants. In Chinese, it is called "山梗菜" (shan geng cai).
