わが国の本州、岩手県以南から太平洋側、それに四国と九州に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の沢沿いに生え、高さは３０メートルになります。樹冠は円錐形で、先端は尖ります。樹皮は赤褐色で、薄く縦に割れます。葉は小さな鱗片状で、気孔帯はＸ字状になります。果実は、直径７ミリほどの球果です。材は、「ひのき（檜）」よりも軽く軟らかいために、建築材や器具材に利用されます。名前は、「ひのき」よりも「さわらか（軽軟）」であることに因みます。

The Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Iwate prefecture south to the Pacific Ocean side of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows along the mountain streams in montane to supalpine zone, and reaches a height of 30 m. The canopy is conical and has a pointed tip. The bark is reddish brown and splits thinly and vertically. The leaves are small scaly and the stomatal zone is X-shaped. The fruit is a cone with a diameter of about 7 mm. The timber is lighter and softer than Hinoki cypress, so it is used as a building material and equipment material. The name comes from the fact that it is "soft" rather than Hinoki cypress.
