[Index] [Back]

Saxifraga x geum

Saxifraga x geum

The Saxifraga x geum belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is now known to be a hybrid between the Saxifraga umbrosa and the Saxifraga hirsta. This herb grows mainly in the Pyrenees but has become naturalised in many European countries including Britain. It forms dark green carpets and can reach 18-25 cm in height. The leaves are round or ovate, shallowly crenate, with long petioles. The numerous small white flowers, yellow at the base and spotted red, bloom in panicles from May to June.
