ヨーロッパの北極海沿岸やアルプス、ロッキー山脈に分布しています。湿潤な岩場に生え、高さは５〜１０センチほどになります。楕円形の葉はごく小さくロゼット状で、短い毛が生えています。７月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして赤紫色の花を咲かせます。花弁はへら状で、１０本の雄しべがあります。わが国の「しこたんそう（Saxifraga cherlerioides var. rebunshirensis）」の近縁種です。

The Purple saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed along the Arctic coast of Europe, the Alps, and the Rocky Mountains in North America. This herb grows on moist rocks and can reach 5-10 cm in height. The elliptic leaves are tiny, rosette-shaped and have short hairs. Around July, the flower stalks are stretched to bloom magenta flowers. The petals are spatula-shaped and have 10 stamens. It is a closely related species of "Shikotan-so" (Saxifraga cherlerioides var. Rebunshirensis) in Japan.
