The Small scabious (Scabiosa columbaria) belongs to Dipsacaceae (the Teasel family). It is a biennial herb that is native to from the Mediterranean region of Europe, North Africa and western Asia. This herb grows in dry, sunny grasslands, rocky hillsides and open woods, and it can reach about 60 cm in height. It is much branched and has gray-green, rather hairy leaves. The basal leaves are lanceolate, and the stem leaves are dissected or twice dissected. The numerous lavender-blue flowerheads bloom from summer until the first frost.
