The Butterfly plant (Schizanthus x wisetonensis) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is an annual or a biennia herb. The genus Schizanthus has 15 to 20 species native to Chile in South America. The Weissetonensis strain, created in the United Kingdom from a cross between Schizanthus pinnatus and Schizanthus retusus (syn. Schizanthus grahamii), is usually used as the main ornamental species. It grows 30 to 40 cm tall and has characteristics intermediate to those of its hybrid parents. The leaves are light green and resemble ferns. It grows naturally in dry areas with little rainfall, making it difficult to grow in the open in Japan. White, blue, pink, or rose-colored flowers bloom from March to May.
