The Alpine squill (Scilla bifolia) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from northern and western Europe to the Balkan Peninsula. It grows in forests, meadows, and limestone areas, and is 10 to 20 cm tall. It produces two or rarely three lanceolate leaves from a bulb 1 to 2 cm in diameter. From early to late spring, it produces racemes of 6 to 10 dark purple-blue flowers on scapes. The flowers have six perianth segments and bloom upward. The fruit is a capsule.
