地中海沿岸が原産です。１７世紀にスペインの南部で発見され、イギリスに持ち帰った船の名前（The Peru）に因んで名づけられました。和名では「おおつるぼ（大蔓穂）」といいます。高さは２０センチほどになります。５月ごろに、花茎の先に総状花序をだし、小さな青紫色の花をいっぱいに咲かせます。

ユリ科ツルボ属の多年草で、学名は Scilla peruviana。英名は Cuban lily、Peruvian lily。

The Cuban lily (Scilla peruviana) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. This herb was found at southern Spain in seventeeth century and the specific epithet was named the vessel name 'The Peru' that was brought back it. It can reach about 20 cm in height. The racemes are borne on the stem apices and bloom small blue-purple flowers in May.
