Common butterbur (Petasites hybridus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and northern Asia. This herb grows in damp meadows, woods, streamsides and gullies, and can reach 80-120 cm in height. The leaves are large, round, with a diameter of 40-70 cm. The pale lilac-pink or yellowish flower-heads bloom in spring, before the leaves appear.
