The Siberian lupin (Thermopsis lupinoides) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China and Siberia. This herb grows in coastal gravelly beaches or moors, and can reach 40-80 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate, arranged alternately with large stipulars at the base of petioles. The bright yellow flowers bloom at the top of stems from May to August. The Japanese name is named after Kabuki's "Meiboku Sendai Hagi". However, the actual variety in this story is "Ki-hagi" (Lespedeza buergeri).
