The Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra cv. Italic) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a cultivar that is selected in Lombardy, northern Italy, in the 17th century. This tree is fast-growing, very slender upright, column-like, may reach up to 18 m in height with only a spread of 3 to 4.5 m. The bark is initially smooth and gray-green, becoming darker and irregularly furrowed. The leaves are alternate, broadly deltoid and finely serrate-crenate. It is adapted to hot, dry summers and grows poorly in humid conditions, being short-lived due to fungal diseases
