せいようひいらぎ (西洋柊)

地中海沿岸から西アジアが原産です。自生地では高木になりますが、ふつうは低木です。縁に棘のある楕円形の葉が互生します。雌雄異株です。４月から５月ごろ、芳香のある白色の花を咲かせます。１１月ごろには球形の果実が赤く熟します。「クリスマスホーリー」とも呼ばれ、クリスマスの飾りに使われます。 |

モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Ilex aquifolium。英名は Holly、English holly。 |

The Holly (Ilex aquifolium) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Mediterranean coast and West Asia. This tree grows taller in the indigenous lands. The leaves are elliptic, spinescent and arranged in opposite. It is dioecious. The fragrant white flowers bloom from April to May. The globose fruits ripen red in November. This tree is also called "Christmas holly", and used for Christmas decorations. |
