北アメリカの東部に分布しています。湿り気のある林内や湿地などにふつうに生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。葉は倒卵形から倒披針形で互生し、縁には円鋸歯があります。葉は秋になると、赤紫色から深紅色に紅葉します。５月ごろ、散房花序をだし、白色から淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。果実は小さななし状果で、秋に真っ赤に熟します。渋みや苦味が強い果実です。

バラ科セイヨウカマツカ属の落葉低木で、学名は Aronia albutifolia。英名は Red ckokeberry。

The Red chokeberry (Aronia albutifolia) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to eastern North America. This tree grows commonly in wet woods or swamps and can reach 2-4 m in height. The leaves are obovate to oblanceolate and alternate with crenate margines. They turn raspberry to crimson in fall. The corymbs are borne and bloom white or pale pink flowers in May. The fruits are small pome and ripen red in fall. They are very astringent and bitter flavor.
