ヨーロッパから西アジア、それに北アメリカが原産です。氾濫源や林内、河岸などに生え、高さは９０センチ以上になります。葉は濃緑色の卵形で対生し、刺毛に被われています。これに触ると皮膚かぶれの原因になります。６月から９月ごろ、下垂した花序に小さな緑色がかった花を咲かせます。ヨーロッパでは、２０００年以上前から止血剤として利用されてきました。またハーブティーや茹でた料理にも使われます。

イラクサ科イラクサ属の多年草で、学名は Urtica dioica。英名は Stinging nettle。

The Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe, West Asia and North America. This herb grows in flood plains, woodlands or river banks and can reach up to 90 cm in height. The leaves are ovate, dark green, opposite and covered with stinging hairs, causing irritation to the skin. The tiny greenish flowers come in the drooping clusters from June to September. This herb has been used as a medicine to stop bleeding in Europe for over 2000 years. It is also used as a herbal tea or boiled dishes.
