アメリカ大陸を除く世界の熱帯地域に分布しています。古くから観葉植物として栽培されています。葉は表面が濃い緑色で、裏面が赤紫色です。夏に目立たない花を咲かせます。有毒植物で、茎からでる乳液は毒矢に使われたそうです。そのため東南アジアでは、燃やした煙でさえ目を傷めることから「盲目の木（Blindness tree）」と呼ばれています。

トウダイグサ科セイシボク属の常緑低木で、学名は Excoecaria cochinchinensis。英名は Chinese croton。

The Chinese croton (Excoecaria cochinchinensis) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed to tropical latitudes excepting the New World. This tree has been cultivated as an ornamental foliage plant from long ago. The leaves are dark green surface and burgundy red rear surface. The inconspicuous flowers bloom in summer. The plant is toxic and the saps are used as a poison dart.
