The Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from central Europe to Southwest Asia. When mature, it develops a broad, dome-shaped trunk and reaches a height of 20 to 30 m. The bark of young trees is smooth, but on mature trees it cracks into small pieces and peels off in scales. The leaves are large, palmately lobed with five shallow divisions, measuring 10 to 25 cm square. The petioles are 5 to 15 cm long and reddish in color. It is monoecious, producing long racemes in spring with yellowish-green flowers. The fruit is a samara, with seeds bearing wings 20 to 40 mm long.
