Japanese sweet flag (Acorus gramineus) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed through Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan, and in other parts of East Asia. This herb grows along mountain streams and can reach 15-30 cm in height. Leaves are linear. Variegated cultivars are more popular in gardens. Greenish-yellow flowers in rat-tail spikes bloom from March to May. The plant's rhizomes are called "Sekisho" and are used in Chinese herbal medicine. The 1st-2nd photos show the cultivar "Ogon". In Taiwanese, it is called "石菖蒲", and in Chinese, it is called "金銭蒲" (jin qian pu).
