中国の西南部が原産です。わが国へは平安時代に渡来しました。茎は直立し、高さは１５〜４５センチになります。葉は線形で粉緑色を帯び、対生します。５月から１０月ごろ、茎頂に紅色や白色の花を咲かせます。園芸品種も数多く作出され、花色も豊富です。

ナデシコ科ナデシコ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Dianthus chinensis。英名は Chinese pink、Rainbow pink。

The Chinese pink (Dianthus chinensis) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is an evergeen perennial herb that is native to south-west China. This herb was introduced into Japan in the Heian Era (about 1100 years ago). The stem is errect and can reach 15-45 cm in height. The leaves are linear, green with powdery white and opposite. The rose-pink to white flowers come on the stem apices from May to October. Many cultivars have beed breeded, and many flower colors.
