わが国の本州、関東地方から中部地方に分布しています。山地の林内や林縁に生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で短い柄があり、対生します。９月から１０月ごろ、枝先や葉腋から花序をだし、細長い花柄の先に青紫色の花を咲かせます。花序や花柄に毛はありません。和名は、箱根に多く見られることから関所の番小屋、関屋の秋丁字と呼んだそうです。

シソ科ヤマハッカ属の多年草で、学名は Rabdosia effusa。英名はありません。

The "Sekiya-no-akichoji" (Rabdosia effusa) belongs to Labiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu in Japan, westward from Kanto to Chubu district. This herb grows in montane woodlands or forest edges and can reach 30-90 cm in height. The leaves are oblong and opposite with short petioles. The clusters are borne at the axiles and terminal branches, and the bluish-purple flowers bloom from September to October. The clusters and peduncles are glabrous. The Japanese name is said to come from the fact that it is often found in Hakone, and it is called the "aki-choji" of the guardhouse at the barrier.
