わが国の本州、関東地方から中部地方に分布しています。山地の林内や林縁に生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で短い柄があり、対生します。９月から１０月ごろ、枝先や葉腋から花序をだし、細長い花柄の先に青紫色の花を咲かせます。花序や花柄に毛はありません。名前は、箱根に多く見られることから関所の番小屋、関屋の秋丁字と呼んだそうです。

シソ科ヤマハッカ属の多年草で、学名は Rabdosia effusa。英名はありません。

"Sekiya-no-akichoji" (Rabdosia effusa) belongs to Labiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu in Japan, westward from Kanto to Chubu district. This herb grows in montane woodlands or forest edges and can reach 30-90 cm in height. The leaves are oblong and opposite with short petioles. The clusters are borne at the axiles and terminal branches, and the bluish-purple flowers bloom from September to October. The clusters and peduncles are glabrous.
