The Barberton groundsel (Senecio barbertonicus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed in southern Africa, from Mozambique to eastern Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and South Africa. It grows in rocky grasslands and grows to about 2 m tall. The trunk is fleshy, and the light green, cylindrical leaves are densely clustered around the stem. In winter, it produces yellow flowers with a sweet fragrance. The specific epithet "barberton-icus" comes from the South African city of Barberton, where the plant is native.
