わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州それに東アジアに分布しています。やや湿り気のある道ばたや河原などに生え、高さは３０〜１５０センチになります。茎には４稜があります。葉は１〜２回羽状複葉で小葉は卵形、先端は尖ります。９月から１０月ごろ、上部の枝に黄色い頭花を咲かせます。舌状花は１〜５個あります。果実は線形の痩果で、先端には３〜４個の棘があります。和名は、葉のかたちが樹木の「せんだん（栴檀）」に似ていることから。

キク科センダングサ属の一年草で、学名は Bidens biternata。英名はありません。

"Sendan-gusa" (Bidens biternata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is distributed westward from Kanto region to Shikuku and Kyushu in Japan and East Asian. It grows in wetish roadsides or stream banks and can reach 30-150 cm in height. The stems are quadrangular. The leaves are once to twice pinnatly compound with acute ovate leaflets. The yellow flower-heads appear on the upper branches from September to October. The flower-head has around 1-5 ray flowers. The fruits are achenes tipped with 3-4 barbed spines.
