わが国の本州、四国・九州に分布しています。渓流の岩場に生え、高さは１０〜４０センチになります。茎や葉には粗い毛で被われています。葉は線形から線状披針形で、上半部に疎らに鋸歯があります。９月から１１月ごろ、枝先に淡紫色から白色の頭花を咲かせます。別名で、「みずぎく（水菊）」とも呼ばれます。

キク科シオン属の多年草で、学名は Aster microcephalus。英名はありません。

"Senbon-giku" (Aster microcephalus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This herb grows on the rocky places along streams, and up to a height of 10-40 cm. The stems and leaves are covered with coarse hairs. The leaves are linear to linear-lanceolate, and there are sparse serrations in the upper half. The pale purple to white head flowers bloom at the branches from September to November. Another name is also called "Mizu-giku".
