熱帯アメリカが原産です。帝王貝細工と同じようにカサカサとした花で色があせないことから、和名では「せんにちこう（千日紅）」と呼ばれています。高さは３０～６０センチほどで、７月から１０月ごろ、枝先に直径２センチほどの球状の頭花を咲かせます。花弁状の総苞片は紙質で、紫紅色や淡いピンク色、白色などがあります。写真中１３～１５は、園芸品種の「ファイヤーワークス（cv. Fireworks）」。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。
ヒユ科センニチコウ属の一年草で、学名は Gomphrena globosa。英名は Globe amaranth。 
The Globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) belongs to the Amaranthaceae (the Amaranth family). It is an annual herb that is native to tropical America. This herb can reach 30-60 cm in height. It blooms spherical flowerheads about 2 cm across from July to October. The flowers are dry papery, petal-shaped involcal bracts and magenta, pale pink or white colors. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
