東アフリカおよびマダガスカル島が原産です。茎が木質化して樹木状になり、高さは３メートルほどになります。ベンケイソウ科のなかでは、もっとも大きくなる種です。大きな葉は三角形で、フェルト状の白毛が密生しています。春から夏にかけて、茎頂に総状花序をだし、小さな黄色がかった花を咲かせます。

ベンケイソウ科リュウキュウベンケイ属の常緑低木で、学名は Kalanchoe beharensis。英名は Velvet leaf、Elephant ear。

The Velvet leaf (Kalanchoe beharensis) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Madagascar and eastern Africa. This tree a woody, succulent and can reach about 3 m in height. This is a most large species in the Orpine family. The leaves are large and triangular, covered with dense felt-like white hairs. The small yellowish flowers come on terminal racemes in spring to summer.
