The "Senryo" (Sarcandra glabra) belongs to Myrsinaceae (the Myrsine family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed southward from Chubu district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, as well as the warm to tropical areas, Taiwan, China, India and so on. This shrub grows in forests of mountains and hikksides, and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate with acute serrate edges. The inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers bloom from April to June. The fruits are spherical and ripen red in late fall. They are adorned in Japan during New Year's Day and Bonsai. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "草珊瑚" and "草珊瑚" (cao shan hu) in Chinese.
