The "Sendai-zasa" (Sasa chartacea) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bumboo that is a species native to Japan, and is found from Hokkaido to Honshu. It grows in the warm temperate zone and cool temperate zone, and the height of the culm is 100 to 150 cm. It is related to the "Miyako-zasa" (Sasa nipponica). The internodes of the culm are long, the nodes are swollen into a spherical shape, and there is one branch at each node. The culm sheath (the skin that wraps around the culm) has fine hairs that grow in the opposite direction, the leaf sheath is 6-9 cm long and densely covered in spreading fine hairs, and the oral setae (the hairs on the auricles) are bristles that spread out in a radial pattern. The leaves are lanceolate, 4-17 cm long and 8-23 mm wide, with the upper surface hairless and the lower surface densely covered in soft hairs. It is also known by the name "Oo-kuma-zasa".
