ヨーロッパ中部から西アジアが原産です。日当たりの良い林縁などに生え、高さは６〜８メートルくらいになります。葉は濃緑色で対生し、秋には紅葉します。２月から３月ごろ、黄色い花を咲かせます。朝鮮半島から中国に生える「さんしゅゆ（山茱萸）」ときわめて似ています。

ミズキ科サンシュユ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Cornus mas。英名は Cornelian cherry。

The Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to Central Europe and West Asia. This tree grows on sunny forest edges and is about 6 to 8 m high. The leaves are dark green and opposite to each other, and turn red in fall. The yellow flowers come in February to March. It is very similar to "Shan zhu yu" grows in the Korean Peninsula to China.
