せいようさんざし (西洋山査子)

ヨーロッパ中部、イギリス、北アフリカから中央アジアに分布しています。高さは４〜９メートルほどで、５月に白色または淡い紅色の５弁花を咲かせます。１６２０年に、イギリスから清教徒を乗せてアメリカに渡ったメイフラワー号に、この花が描かれていたことから、「メイフラワー」とも呼ばれています。花や葉、果実は、血管を刺激して血行をスムーズにする作用があるといわれ、薬用にも使われています。 |

バラ科サンザシ属の落葉低木で、学名は Crataegus oxyacantha。英名は Hawthorn、Mayflower、Whitethorn。 |

The Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed to central Europe, Great Britain, North Africa and Central Asia. This tree can reach 4-9 m in height and blooms white to pale rose-pink flowers in May. The flowers, leaves and fruits behave as an improver of blood circulation, and used for herbal medicine. It is also called "Mayflower", and named for the famous ship "Mayflower" that transported the English Separatists from England to Plymouth in 1620 and was painted this flowers on the side. |
