せいしか (聖紫花) [Index] [Back] わが国の八重山諸島の石垣島や西表島、それに台湾や中国中南部に分布しています。川沿いの林内や林縁の岩上に生え、高さは２〜５メートルになります。葉は長楕円形から狭長楕円形で革質、枝先に集まってつきます。３月から４月ごろ、枝先に淡桃紫色または桃色の花を３〜５個ずつ咲かせます。花冠の上側内面には、紅紫色の斑点があります。雄しべは１０個です。別名で「やえやませいしか（八重山聖紫花）」とも呼ばれます。  ツツジ科ツツジ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Rhododendron latoucheae。英名はありません。  "Seishika" (Rhododendron latoucheae) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed to Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima of the Yaeyama Islands in Japan, Taiwan and Central and southern China. This tree grows in the forests along the rivers and on the rocky places of the forest edges, and its height is 2-5 m. The leaves are oblong to narrow-oblong, leathery, and gathered at the tip of the branches. The 3-5 light peach purple or peach flowers will bloom at the termimal branches from March to April.
