わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国、極東ロシアに分布しています。亜高山帯の針葉樹林内に生え、大きな群落を形成します。ニワスギゴケ属のなかではもっとも大きくなり、高さは８～２０センチになります。葉は披針形で、１０～１８ミリの長さがあり、乾くと著しく縮れます。雌雄異株で、蒴は円筒形です。

スギゴケ科ニワスギゴケ属のコケ類で、学名は Pogonatum japonicum。英名はありません。

"Seitaka-sugi-goke" (Pogonatum japonicum) belongs to the family Polytrichaceae. It is a perennial moss that is distributed all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China and far east Russia. This moss grows in sub-alpine coniferous forests and grow in large clusters. It is a largest species of Pogonatum genus, and can reach 8-20 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate 10-18 mm long. They highly crinkle in dry condition. It is dioecious. The capsules are cylindrical.
