ヨーロッパから西アジアが原産です。高原の茂みや岩の多い森などに生え、高さは１〜３メートルになります。枝には、鋭い棘があります。葉は丸形で、３〜５裂しています。５月から６月ごろ、白色でベル形の花を１個か２個ずつ咲かせます。果実は緑色で丸い液果で、ふつうジャムに加工されます。

スグリ科スグリ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Ribes uva-crispa。英名は Gooseberry。

The Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa) belongs to Grossulariaceae (the Gooseberry family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to Europe and western Asia. This shrub grows in alpine thickets and rocky woods, and can reach 1-3 m in height. The branches have sharp spines. The leaves are round and divided into 3-5 lobes. The flowers are white bell-shaped, singly or in pairs and bloom May to June. The fruits are green, round berries and usually processed to jam.
