ヨーロッパ南東部からアジア西部に分布しています。乾燥した岩礫地などに生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。樹皮は灰褐色で、四角形の板状に割れます。葉は円形で、基部は深い心形、全縁です。晩春、前年枝または主枝に、淡紅色で２センチほどの蝶形花を咲かせます。果実は扁平な豆果で、熟して褐色となります。

マメ科ハナズオウ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Cercis siliquastrum。英名は Judas tree。

The Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to south-eastern Europe and northern Asia. This tree grows in arid screes and can reach about 10 m in height. The barks are grayish-brown and furrowed into quadrangular ridges. The leaves are round, entire and deep cordate at the basis. The pale rose pink, papilionacenous flowers about 2 cm long, bloom on the new branches and main branches in spring. The fruits are flat seed pods, and ripen in brown.
