ヨーロッパに分布しています。山地の石灰岩地に生え、高さは６０センチまでになります。茎はしばしば赤みを帯び、無毛です。根生葉は掌状に３〜５裂し、長い葉柄があります。５月から７月ごろ、茎頂の小さな散形花序に白色がかったまたは淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。果実は丸く、鉤状の棘があります。この植物は、伝統的に多くの漢方薬の原料とされています。

The Sanicle (Sanicula europaea) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Europe. It grows in mountainous limestone terrain and grows up to 60 cm tall. The stems are often reddish and hairless. The basal leaves are palmately lobed with three to five lobes and long petioles, and the white or pale pink flowers bloom in small umbels at the top of the stem from May to July. Fruits are round with hooked spines. This plant is traditionally used as a source of many herbal medicines.
