おそらくはヨーロッパの南東部から西アジアが原産だと考えられています。わが国へは、明治時代に導入されました。耕地や荒れ地、川沿いなどに生え、高さは７０センチほどになります。上部の葉は、羽状に切れ込みます。４月から６月ごろ、総状花序をだし、白色の花を咲かせます。根茎は白く、強い辛みがあります。これは薬味や粉わさびの原料として利用されます。別名で「ホースラディッシュ」や「わさびだいこん（山葵大根）」とも呼ばれます。

アブラナ科ワサビダイコン属の多年草で、学名は Armoracia rusticana。英名は Horseradish。

The Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is a perennial herb that is probably native to southeastern Europe and western Asia. It wad introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). This herb grows in arable lands, waste grounds or by streams and can reach about 70 cm in height. The upper leaves are notched pinnately. The racemes are borne and bloom white flowers from April to June. The root is white and has a hot mustard-like flavour. It is used to make the condiment or the powdered horseradish.
