ヨーロッパが原産です。わが国へは第二次大戦後に帰化しました。道端や草地などに生え、高さは５０センチほどになります。茎は直立してよく分枝します。葉は３出複葉で、狭楕円形の小葉がつきます。春から秋にかけて、茎頂と葉腋から円筒状の花序をだし、白色から淡紅色の小さな蝶形花を咲かせます。花序には灰色の毛が密生します。

マメ科シャジクソウ属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Trifolium arvense。英名は Rabbitfoot clover。

The Rabbitfoot clover belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual or biennial herb that is native to Europe. It was introduced into Japan after the Second World War. This herb grows in roadsides and grasslands, and it can reach about 50 cm in height. The stem is erect and much-branched. The leaves are trifoliate with narrow-elliptic leaflets. The culumnar inflorescences are borne on the stem apices or axils and bloom white to small pale rose-pink papilionaceous flowers from spring to fall. The inflorescences are covered with dense gray hairs.
