インド北部から中国が原産です。わが国でも、一部で野生化しています。高さは５０〜１００センチになり、多数の茎を叢生します。三角形の葉は互生し、鞘状の托葉があります。９月から１１月ごろ、白い萼片の花を咲かせます。中国では、種子は穀物に、若葉は野菜として食用にされます。和名は、茎の根もとが赤い「そば（蕎麦）」ということから。別名で「しゅっこんそば（宿根蕎麦）」とも呼ばれます。

タデ科ソバ属の多年草で、学名は Fagopyrum cymosum。英名は Perennial buckwheat。

The Perennial buckwheat (Fagopyrum cymosum) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native from northern India to China. Even in Japan, it has become wild in some areas. It can reach 50-100 cm in height and crowds a large number of stems. The triangular leaves are alternate and with sheath-like stipules. The white calyx flowers come in September to November. In China, seeds are edible as grains and young leaves are edible as vegetables. The Japanese name is "Soba" with a red stem. It is also called "Shukkon-soba" by another name.
